Onion Chutney on Eid

Like tomato chutney onion chutney is also famous. It is used with simple foods like dal and rice to add flavor in it. It is also eaten with chapatis and paranthas.


  • 15 red chillies
  • 400 gms onion
  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • Tamarind size of a lemon
  • 1/2 teaspoon mustard
  • salt to taste
  • Oil for frying


Unwrap the onion, cut it fine and put it aside. Grind asafoetida (hing) powder, red chillies and tamarind in even paste, dashing a slight water, if needed. Heat a small amount of oil in sauce pot and put in uraad dal and mustard; When the mustard splutters add sliced onion and cook well; when onion curls up at the edges and becomes golden brown in color, put in salt to taste and the paste, combine well and bring to the boli if needed, slightly more oil or water can be put in. Serve.
