Eid Prayers

The special Islamic prayer namely Eid prayers are denoted with many names but the most famous ones are Salat al-Eid and Salat al-Eidain amongst others. Such special prayers commemorate the two Islamic festivals which Muslims observe with gaiety. In Arabic language, these two Eid festivals are together called Eidain. Here is the brief description of these two Islamic festivals:-

  • Celebrated after the completion of Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr marks the 1st day of Arabic month of Shawwal which falls as the beginning of Islamic calendar’s 10th month.

  • Celebrated on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah which is Islamic calendar’s 12th month, Eid al-Adha is the celebration of sacrifice.

People from around the world come to Makkah in Saudi Arabia on both the occasions to pray this special prayer and good chunk of them celebrate that in their homelands accordingly.

Islamic scholars from various schools of thoughts interpret the significance of this special prayer or salat in different manner. According to the Hanafi scholars Salat al-Eid is a Wajib prayer while it is considered Sunnah al-Mu'kkadah by the Maliki scholars. Shaf'i jurisprudence too considers it Sunnah al-Mu'kkadah but according to Hanbali scholars it is a Fard prayer instead. According to few scholars this prayer is Fard al-Ayn while others consider it Fard al-Kifaya prayer.

Participation of Women

Women believing in Islamic faith as Muslims are inspired for their participation in the Salat al-Eid prayer. As per the rule Muslim women must pray in a place or room which is different from the ones where Muslim men pray this special prayer.

Salat al-Eid prayer timing begins once sun rises and reaches above the horizon at roughly two meters while the timing ends till the time prior to Dhuhr Salat until reaching its meridian. Following to the principles of Islam’s Prophet as Sunnah Eid al-Fitr prayer timings are deliberately delayed unlike the hastening of Eid al-Adha prayers hastened by keeping in consideration two logics of the Fitrah distribution prior to Eid al-Fitr prayer and to process sacrifice offer post Eid al-Adha prayers. Hadith book have recorded this proven Sunnah and therefore it is practiced by the followers of Islam.

From the time sun is 3m (9.8 ft) from its horizon until its reaching to meridian prior to Dhuhr Salat is the suitable timing for Eid prayers to begin and end. As recorded by Ahmad ibn Hassan al-Bana from Jundub that: "Islam’s Prophet used to pray the Eid al-Fitr prayer by the time sun would reach to nearly 6m (20 ft) above its horizon while it would be just 3m (9.8 ft) above the horizon for Eid al Adha  for the 'Eid of the sacrifice.’

According to Hanafi jurisprudence one must pray the Eid prayers of two ra'kats with pronouncement of six extra takbir during the prayer which is wajib. Timings for the three takbir are pronouncement are once opening takbir is done and before reciting the Qur'an while completing first rak'ah but the pronouncement of three takbir during the second rak'ah must be done post Qur'anic recitals. While in the pronouncement of every extra takbir one must raise one's hands to complete special prayer.

Although not Fardh but khutbah after Salat al-Eid should be listened due to it being Sunnah hence it is Wajib to listen to complete the prayer.

Ibn al-Qayyum writes about the adhan and iqamah for Salat al-Eidain that "while the Prophet of Islam used to go to the specific place of prayer he did perform this special salat without any adhan or iqamah and even didn’t say Friday congregational prayer if it fell on that day."
