Eid Celebration In India

Eid is the festivals of Muslims whose celebrations begin from ‘Chaand Raat’ that is “Night of the Moon”. For Eid celebration in India, Muslims visit shopping malls and bazaars on this night to do shopping of Eid. Beautiful henna designs are drawn on the palms of women mostly young girls and they also buy bangles of various colors to go by with their dresses.

People greet each other saying ‘Eid Mubarak’ and embracing each other. People also exchange gifts. They wear new clothes and also children are given Eidi (sum of money) by the older people, in return, salaam is offered by children.

The day of Eid begins with offering of Eid prayers in the Mosque by the men. Then many men tread toward graveyard to offer respect to their family members who are no more with them. Once they come back to home from mosque they go visit friends, relatives, neighbors and Murabbis who are the eldest members of the families. They join them to eat special dishes that are prepared on the occasion of eid for example, snacks, sweets and other special meal. One of the most common dishes of Eid that is common in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh is ‘Sevaiyan’; a dish of toasted, fine syrupy vermicelli noodles in the midst of milk and dried fruit. ‘Shemai’ is a name given to ‘sevain’ in Bangladesh.

Women and girls apply beautiful design of Mehndi on their palms and feet. This Henna is an obtained from plants to temporarily dye the skin color.

Before offering Eid Prayers it is important for all able Muslim to give out charity known as ‘Fitra’. Along with that some people who earn above the certain limit are entitled to give 2.5% of their income to the needy, it is known as ‘zakaat’ and is obligatory. Some people give out money however it can be given in the form of food and clothes but it should be equivalent to the 2.5% of the yearly income of the individual.

 In Bangladesh there is an Eidgah in the locality of Sholakia, where the huge congregation of people gathers to offer Eid prayers that is offered after ‘chaand raat’ that announces the end of Ramadan. It is said that it constitute the largest number in Bangladesh almost 300,000 people comes together on this day.

Some of the popular Masjids of India where huge crowd gather every year to offer Prayers of Eid include; Aishbagh Idgah in Lucknow, Mecca Masjid in Hyderabad,; in Kolkata prayers are offered  on Red Road the Jama Masjid in New Delhi. Thousands of Muslims celebrates this festival with great excitements and happiness. During the Eid Celebration in India, non-Muslim friends come to greet their friends on this day. This celebration’s excitement can be best seen in Hyderabad which has rich heritage of Muslim culture. In Hyderabad Haleem is consumed daily in iftar which is a kind of Meat stew.
