Ajmer Sharif Dargah

Sufi shrine (Dargah) of Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti in Indian state Rajasthan’s Ajmer city is denoted with many names like the Ajmer Sharif Dargah or Ajmer Dargah and or also called simly Ajmer Sharif besides many people calling it Dargah Sharif. The grave (Maqbara) of the revered saint Moinuddin Chisti is located inside the shrine premises.

The Shrine

Nizam Gate is the primary gate to this shrine which follows by other gates like the Shahjahani Gate which emperor Shah Jahan had erected. This gate is followed by the gate built by Sultan Mahmood Khilji and named Buland Darwaza at which the urs flag is hoisted to mark the start of the annual urs for death anniversary rituals in the shrine. The 6th and 7th Rajb days every year is celebrated annual urs for Sufi saint Moinuddin Chishti as an annual festival.

Kalanders

The kalanders from Mehrauli remain the main attraction of Urs. They are denoted with a metaphor of the ‘friends of Gharib Nawaz’ due to their symbolic respect of walking to Ajmer from Delhi all the way each year without fail. Their colourful chadders contain gold and silver threads which they offer.

Trust

Managed under the Dargah Khwaja Saheb Act, 1955 of Government of India an international wakf or endowment manages the dargah (shrine) of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti. Government appoints the Dargah Committee for the purpose of maintaining the shrine with best care one should take besides running many charitable institutions that include guest houses for worshiper devotees, healthcare facilities and many more. Taking care of the rituals of the primary shrine or the Mazar sharif/Astana e Alia is not under government as the inherited Priests or Khadims have their custody of it.
